Job Summary

The Coding/Abstracting Specialist plays a critical role in the healthcare data management process by systematically interpreting and applying clinical data coding methodologies. This role involves analyzing medical records and accurately assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures, ensuring the optimization of data quality and retrieval. The position requires a deep understanding of medical terminology, coding standards (such as ICD and CPT), and regulatory requirements. Specialists must also communicate effectively with healthcare providers to clarify information and guarantee compliance with all relevant guidelines. By maintaining precise and comprehensive coded data, this position supports the overall functionality and efficiency of healthcare operations, contributing to improved patient care and organizational performance.

Essential Functions
  • Conducts abstraction and reviews according to the established procedure and departmental standards.
  • Maintains accurate records of cases that are assessed, and assists with compiling reports for presentation to committees.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with the medical and hospital staff to coordinate usage of data resources.
  • Notifies supervisor of potential or identified problem areas that concern quality issues or trends.
  • Screens appropriate cases for identification as potential quality concerns according to established protocols.
  • Performs and completes special assignments in a timely, accurate and organized manner.
  • Verifies data entered based upon available documentation and submits to the appropirate leadership or external entities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • H.S. Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor's Degree in HIM or related field preferred
  • 2-4 years Relevant clinical data experience in a hospital environment required
