The Dosimetrist is responsible for designing and calculating radiation treatment plans for cancer patients. Working under the supervision of a Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist, the Dosimetrist develops individualized treatment plans that deliver precise doses of radiation to targeted areas while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. This role requires strong technical knowledge of treatment planning systems, radiologic physics, and anatomy, as well as a deep understanding of radiation oncology practices.

The Dosimetrist is responsible for designing and calculating radiation treatment plans for cancer patients. Working under the supervision of a Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist, the Dosimetrist develops individualized treatment plans that deliver precise doses of radiation to targeted areas while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. This role requires strong technical knowledge of treatment planning systems, radiologic physics, and anatomy, as well as a deep understanding of radiation oncology practices.
Essential Functions
- Designs, develops, and calculates individualized radiation treatment plans using advanced treatment planning software, ensuring accurate dose distribution to the prescribed target area.
- Performs dose calculations for external beam therapy and brachytherapy treatments, documenting all relevant treatment parameters in the patient's medical record.
- Collaborates with Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists to determine appropriate beam configurations, field arrangements, and immobilization techniques for optimal treatment delivery.
- Advises Radiation Therapists on the correct implementation of treatment plans, including the use of compensators, bolus materials, wedges, and imaging protocols.
- Assists in the fabrication and/or supervision of custom shielding, compensating filters, and immobilization devices.
- Participates in the quality assurance process for treatment plans, treatment planning systems, and linear accelerators under the direction of the Medical Physicist.
- Provides technical support during brachytherapy procedures, including dose calculations, source loading, and handling of radioactive materials in compliance with safety protocols.
- Utilizes radiation monitoring devices to measure radioactivity and perform source assays, maintaining compliance with regulatory guidelines.
- Participates in continuing education, clinical research, and teaching efforts as appropriate, contributing to the professional development of students, residents, and radiation therapy staff.
- Assists the Medical Physicist with machine calibration tasks and radiation safety procedures, including quality control testing of equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
- 1-3 years of experience in a clinical radiation oncology setting preferred
- Proficient in the use of treatment planning systems and dose calculation software.
- Strong understanding of radiation physics, human anatomy, and oncology practices.
- Ability to interpret physician directives and translate them into effective treatment plans.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to patient safety, quality assurance, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- CMD - Certified Medical Dosimetrist through the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB) or obtained within 12 months of hire required
